Employee Spotlight: Corinna Brence

“I started at NWESI as a data entry clerk but I asked to learn other tasks to better support my division and the company, and was encouraged every step of the way. Today I have a position that gives me variety, job satisfaction and continues to challenge me, and this company helped me create it.”

—Corinna Brence, Support Specialist

How long have you been with NWESI?
I just had my work anniversary in October, so I’ve been with NWESI for 7 years now.

What kind of work did you do before coming to NWESI?
Before NWESI, I was an office manager, bookkeeper, administrative assistant, trainer, personal assistant, landscaper, and built computer systems. I took an aptitude test in high school that said I should be a secretary. I guess it was right because I went to business school and have had mostly secretarial type jobs since.

What’s your current role?
My current role is Support Specialist for our high-tech division which covers a lot of different tasks. I’m still doing data entry but I can also fill in wherever it’s needed. I may be doing quoting, bookkeeping, scheduling, coordinating with the client, or whatever is needed on any given day.

What aspects of your job are most appealing?
I enjoy the variety in my job and that I can set my own daily workload. Sometimes priorities can change and I have to switch gears, but that’s exciting too.

I was initially hired to do reporting, but it wasn’t long before I wanted to learn more. I wanted to learn how to do everything and support our division since the field technicians don’t have much time to do paperwork and I really enjoy paperwork. I’ve also had opportunities to help in accounting, field work, planning our annual company events and entering data for other divisions.

What has been a personal or professional growth over the years?
Taking a larger role in scheduling our work and coordinating manpower. There are so many variables you need to be aware of for each job type and service that it can be a real challenge for me. I’m not a field technician so I don’t have all that knowledge—I’m getting to the point where I’m more comfortable when I’m asked to fill this role.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
My hobbies are reading, crafting of all kinds, singing and music, watching and quoting movies. I love road trips. As an Oregon native I appreciate the beauty of our state and especially the coast.
