John M. Herboth, PE, CxA, EMP, CP-BET

Sr. Commissioning Authority, Bldg Envelope Testing Project Manager

John joined NWESI in late 2007 as a commissioning agent shortly after completing his degree and working eight years with his family’s residential construction business. Providing a QA/QC role for MEP & Control systems in the commercial construction industry was a natural fit with his background. Since 2015 John has led NWESI’s Building Envelope Testing (BET) service with the help of Bruce Gilpin. Using his diverse BET and Cx experiences, Building Envelope Commissioning (BECx) has become one of his highlighted specialties. Since 2018, John has put a focus on fire life safety (FLS) projects, particularly in regards to smoke control systems as a special inspector and fire smoke damper testing. Fire smoke damper testing has been an increasing need regionally across all healthcare sites, including assisted living, memory care, and transitional care facilities which have never gone through the process.

John regularly shares his industry experience doing presentations in the Pacific Northwest for professional societies and regional conferences, sharing success, best practices, and lessons learned from failures of all kinds. When at home, he tries to raise but mostly wrangle his 3.5 year old daughter and 2 year old son with his wife as well keep up with their dog, cat, bunny, snake, and recently purchased home in mid-2020 which has been under a major remodel throughout the pandemic.

In 2020, John was honored as one of BCxA’s 20 under 40 for building commissioning efforts and is currently the 2022 BCxA Northwest Chapter president. John and the commissioning community is ramping up their engagement with regional educational partners to introduce high school and college students to a potential career in commissioning, promoting apprenticeship programs such as BECA, and providing support to individual students in regards to college application reviews, resume reviews, mock interviews, and design project sponsorships.
